As a father, friend, critical thinker, Bible scholar, philosopher, educator, and President of Rudolph Kwanue University College, I am deeply honored to have been part of the recent National Commission on Higher Education (NCHE) event, organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and USAID Liberia, to officially launch the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policy in higher education. This remarkable occasion, held at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, represents a monumental step forward for Liberian education.
As an educator, a proud and loyal Liberian, and a humanitarian with a lifelong commitment to inclusion, the DEI policy profoundly aligns with my passion for supporting marginalized communities. At Rudolph Kwanue University, we have made meaningful strides in this area, including our commitment to a close friend who is deaf and unable to speak. His courage and resilience inspire us daily. To honor his dedication, we have waived his tuition and fees, and he contributes only a nominal $50 per semester to maintain his record with our registrar. This is just one example of our commitment to uplifting those with disabilities and providing them with a quality education that respects their dignity and potential.
The launch of the DEI policy brings me great personal joy. My commitment to inclusivity and support for individuals with disabilities has been a central part of my mission for over 38 years. The work of NCHE, the Ministry of Education, and USAID to drive this policy is a major achievement for our nation, as it offers new pathways for all Liberians to participate fully in higher education.
My heartfelt thanks go to Prof. Edward Lama Wonkonye, Executive Director of NCHE, for his relentless dedication to this policy, and to Hon. Dr. Jarso M. Jallah, Minister of Education, for her support and recognition of NCHE’s efforts. Her prompt action today to award a scholarship to Julienne Yanpu Nushann, a young woman with disabilities, brought tears to my eyes. Supported by USAID, Julienne has earned an associate degree in Early Childhood Education. Her courageous journey and her powerful rendition of the national anthem in the Kpelle language during the ceremony were both moving and inspiring—she is truly a gifted individual and a model of resilience for all of us.
I also extend my gratitude to Hon. Cllr. Cooper W. Kruah, Minister of Labor, for serving as the chief launcher, and to Liberia’s Cultural Ambassador, Balawa Balawa, for his captivating traditional performance. As a man with deep respect for our heritage, I was touched by his performance, which reflects the beauty of our traditions. My thanks also go to the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), the NCHE family, various higher education institutions, and Hon. Josiah F. Joekai, my former representative aspirant.
Additionally, I extend my appreciation to H.E. Joseph Boakai, President of the Republic of Liberia; Jim Wright, USAID Liberia Mission Director; Hon. Lawrina Donkeh, Deputy Executive Director for Planning and Research Development at NCHE; and Dr. Mator M. F. Kpangbai, USAID Test Deputy Chief of Party. Your expertise and passion are evident, and it has been an honor to work alongside each of you.
I would also like to take a special moment to thank Hon. S. Reginald Zunleh Mehnpaine, the invaluable mind behind this project.
To the NCHE family, I want to affirm that Rudolph Kwanue University College will fully support this DEI policy, as it is aligned with our mission and my personal calling as a humanitarian. This initiative is a crucial step in enhancing Liberia’s image and ensuring that we stand as loyal and faithful citizens, dedicated to uplifting our nation and providing equal opportunities for all.
Congratulations to the NCHE, the Ministry of Education, USAID, and all universities and colleges across Liberia for their collective commitment to a brighter, more inclusive future for our nation.
